Using Breathwork as an Existential Practice for Mindfulness

In retreat spaces, breathwork can be more than a relaxation tool—it can be an existential practice: a way to meet yourself as you are, in real time, without fixing or forcing anything.

When we bring mindful attention to the breath, we’re practicing:

- **Presence:** returning to what’s true right now

- **Acceptance:** allowing sensation, emotion, and thought to arise and pass

- **Meaning-making:** noticing what the body reveals when the mind gets quiet

- **Connection:** remembering we belong—to life, to spirit, to each other

**Try this (5 minutes):**

1. Sit comfortably and soften your gaze.

2. Inhale through the nose for a count of 4.

3. Exhale slowly for a count of 6.

4. On each exhale, ask gently: *“What am I being invited to release?”*

5. On each inhale, ask: *“What am I ready to receive?”*
